Collectibles
The story of the Visitors and the Resistance is chronicled in several movies, books, and other fiction. The legacy of V is also apparent in the mutlitude of promotional items that once stocked store shelves. This section highlights some of these collectibles.

Video

Both V miniseries are available on VHS and DVD in the US. In the VHS version, the original 4-hour miniseries is a two-cassette set (197 minutes), and The Final Battle is available in two formats: as a single tape, or as a three-tape set (268 minutes). The DVD of the original miniseries contains extra features such as the theatrical trailer, commentary by Kenneth Johnson, and a "making of" featurette.

The V series is available on VHS by subscription from Columbia House and will be released on DVD by Warner Brothers on July 27, 2004. The series also periodically airs on the Sci-Fi Channel and other cable networks. (Note that the episodes shown on Sci-Fi are reported to be edited to allow for more commercial time.)

In Australia, the entire V saga was reportedly released on PAL-format VHS video some years ago. The release consisted of nine tapes: The 10-hour miniseries spanning three tapes, and the 19 weekly episodes spanning six tapes. Fans say these tapes can sometimes still be found in specialty shops Down Under. The original miniseries is also widely available in Australia on DVD (Region 4).

V is also readily available on PAL format in the UK; VHS videos of the miniseries can be found on Amazon.co.uk (note that The Final Battle comes as three separately-purchased videos rather than one 3-tape set as in the US). The series is available in the UK from BlackStar.

The miniseries and weekly series have also been available on laserdisc in the past. Read the V DVD and LD reviews on The Laser Examiner web site.

Audio

Although Warner Brothers has never released any official V soundtracks, some of the composers for V have released their own promotional CDs that include themes from V. Music from V also appears occassionally on some collections of science-fiction theme songs.

Note that the original main title theme to The Final Battle (the one appearing during the opening credits) has apparently never been released on disc. The composers for that theme were Barry de Vorzan and Joseph Conlan.

Dennis McCarthy's Suite From "V" is available to purchase from the iTunes Music Store (iTunes required).

Fantastic Television Themes
PrimeTime USA PTD 3006

This disc includes a collection of several television theme songs, such as those from Quantum Leap, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, and Airwolf. One of the themes from the V series is included. Though not the originals, these themes are fairly good reproductions.

  1. V: The Series (2:43)

Fantastic Voyage: A Journey Through Classic Fantasy Film Music
Silva Screen FILMCD 146

This UK import contains a 77-minute collection of sci-fi themes that sound very close to the original scores. Track 11 is Joe Harnell's Main Title Part 2 from V. Other themes include Alien, 2010, The Terminator, and Total Recall.

  1. V For Victory - Main Title

The soundtrack discs are extremely difficult to find, but there are a few online mail order companies you may want to try. (None of these companies are officially endorsed by this site; they are mentioned here as a service only.) If you have success with any of these companies, please let me know, and let them know where you heard about them!

There's another CD featuring music from V which isn't as rare as the others. GNP/Crescendo's Super Scary Monster Party features a track titled "Suite from 'V'".

Books

During the time V was airing, and even after the series was cancelled, numerous paperbacks and a few hardcovers were published by various companies. For an illustrated and complete listing of all V novels, refer to the V Fiction Guide.

Kenneth Johnson's long-awaited sequel — V: The Second Generation — is available on Amazon.com in hardcover and paperback.

Comics

DC Comics published a short-lived V comic set during the series that ran from February 1985 to July 1986. There was a total of 18 issues, selling for about 75 cents at the time. For an illustrated and complete listing of all V comics, refer to the V Fiction Guide.

Clothing

You can find some Visitor logo apparel and TheVisitor.info apparel at cafepress.com. You may be able to find Visitor uniforms at Back Lot Props & Costumes or J. Kerezman Costumes.

Toys

Several toys and collectibles were produced by various companies, although reportedly often not marketed very widely. Some of the more well-known toys and collectibles include the following items.

In 1984 LJN Toys Ltd. produced a 12" action figure doll named simply "Enemy Visitor." The figure is fully poseable and wears a red cloth uniform. He comes complete with sidearm, glasses, and a removeable mask that, when removed, reveals the alien head underneath.

Arco Industries Ltd. produced a series of plastic gun toys (see this picture) made to resemble weapons used in V. The Arco toys were simply replicas of U.S. military rifles, compasses, and grenades — like the stolen munitions used by the Resistance. Arco also reportedly made a full-size Visitor rifle toy part of their "Laser Blaster Target Game Set." A 1980s toy line called "Bravestar" included an enemy weapon that was a likeness of a V sidearm, except it was red with a light green tube separating the two gun halves instead of a clear tube (see photo).

It's also an interesting piece of trivia that V props have often re-appeared in other science fiction shows. For example, at least one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation featured the Visitor sidearm weapon, and an episode of Knight Rider re-used the mother ship doomsday weapon. Reportedly, the "B" sci-fi movie Cybertracker 2 re-used the mothership corridor and hangar deck in altered form, as well as the shocktrooper uniforms.

In the original miniseries, Sean Donovan and his friend Josh are shown playing with minature V action figures and a Squad Ship toy. These were supposedly prototypes for toys that were never widely released. The prototypes reportedly included the squad vehicle, Kyle's red sports car, and four figures: Visitor Trooper, Diana, Kyle, and Julie. There were also some plastic figurines that were produced, but were only available in Spain and Europe: Trooper, Diana, Mike, and Julie. These Spanish figurines are actually more like Bend-Ems or large erasers — each is bendable and all one piece; the figures have no moving appendages and no accessories. In addition, the figures unfortunately look nothing like the characters they're supposed to be.

Fans have reported encountering at least two V models: a mothership diorama over Los Angeles and a Visitor shuttlecraft. A small Visitor Fighter model is available from T.M. Lindsey. On a related note, one episode of the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan" features a skyfighter and a squad vehicle shuttlecraft shown in the background of some scenes. (They're hanging in the bedroom of a sci-fi fanatic.) These may be models like those seen by fans, or they may simply be left-over props from the production of V. Another fan sent in a photo of a plastic shuttle toy that is slightly longer than an American dollar bill and appears to be hollow (see photos: 1 2 3). It has stickers for the Visitor logo and its scale is a bit longer than a Skyfighter. Small Art Works has an example of an extremely detailed and high-quality skyfighter model. In addition, there is a Visitor fighter (of a design not similar to the Skyfighter and shuttles) part of Galgo's "V Invasion Extraterrestre" line of fiction-powered toys.

DMT Productions sells die-cast miniature vehicles with the Visitor logo on them (a car, van, limosine, jeep, Hummer, and motorcycle) as well as a Skyfighter and most recently a Mother Ship and transport shuttles (example 1 example 2). For prices and ordering information, Contact Dave Hanson at morrris99@earthlink.net. (Note: Lately there seems to be no response from this address. If you have updated contact information for DMT Productions, please contact me.)

In 1984 Fleer produced a set of V trading cards picturing various characters and scenes from the miniseries and weekly series. There are 66 cards and 22 stickers, but due to a numbering error there is no card 28 and there are two different cards numbered 38.

Other promotional items include: a 1984 line of puffy stickers from Gordy International; a lunchbox and thermos set from Aladdin Industries (picture at right); a 1984 walkie-talkie set from Nasta/Powertronic; a 1984 "V Bop Bag" punching bag from Arco; four 1985 jigsaw puzzles from Maruca Industries; a V belt buckle available in 1985 from such places as K-Mart; "V" and Visitor logo patches; and a hat made by an as-yet unknown company.

There was also a video game based on V for the Commodore 64 computer. You can find more information in Downloads. There was also a video game produced by MD Systems for the TRS-80 Color Computer called "Shock Trooper". It featured the Visitor logo, the music from the Final Battle, and yes, a shock trooper. The object of the game was to infiltrate and destroy a Visitor storage base while rescuing any prisoners there. However, there is no explicit mention of "V" in the game.
